Memphis Opens the Huff Era With a Statement
Memphis fans came into the new Charles Huff era with plenty of questions and some skepticism. But after the Tigers’ road victory over UNLV, that skepticism may be turning into belief. Memphis battled through a slow start, made the necessary adjustments and finished strong when it mattered most.
Marcus Stokes stood out in his Memphis debut, throwing for 223 yards and two touchdowns while Jaylin Carter added 97 rushing yards and a score. The defense also came up big late, with Elijah Kinsler recording 2.5 sacks. After the game, Huff praised his team’s fight and called the victory a “national statement,” while making it clear that the Tigers still have plenty to clean up.
The win also gave Huff a place in Memphis history as the first coach in program history to win his debut on the road. It’s only the beginning, but Memphis already looks like a team capable of making noise nationally. If the Tigers continue to improve, Memphis could be the G6 front-runner.
